Toxic - Issue 180

Okay, this is a rare review, today  brought my third ever Toxic, I had nothing to read so I thought, yeah, why not buy it. Here's the contents, for once I will actually write a full review for I have a few opinions on the Toxic mag.

PG 1: Front Cover
PG 2: Guess What? (Red Nose Day)
PG 3: A load of boring, non-related rubbish
PG 4: Team Toxic - Lew Stringer
PG 6: Brain-Boggling Puzzles
PG 8: Spongebob's Funniest Bits
PG 10: Spot the Difference (Adventure Time?!)
PG 11: Robin Hoodie - Laura Howell
PG 12: Yogi Bear Poster?
PG 13: Toxic Gamer
PG 14: Puzzles
PG 16: Puzzle Page: Innocent Smoothies
PG 18: Lots of Cheats
PG 20: Pokemon: Black and White
PG 22: Video Game Fact Files: Luigi
PG 23: Mario and Sonic Poster?
PG 24: Celeb Jokes
PG 25: Gorilla Kid - Unknown
PG 26: Win all This!
PG 28: Zoikz - Unknown
PG 30: Sketch Pad
PG 31: Your Jokes and Next Time
PG 32: Back Page: Nose 'n' Arrow

Well, first of all I'd like to say there's one thing I hate about the Toxic, the amount of annoying American cartoons and stuff saying things in large caption bubbles that lead from their mouth, it really annoys me, I never like it when they use a picture from somewhere, and then add tacky captions with them speaking, the Beano and the Dandy both don't do it but this comic does, it's so annoying...
Secondly I'd like to mention the comic strips, this week (I believe) saw the first appearance of new character Gorilla Kid, not sure who it's drawn by but I love it, the idea is great, it has a classic feel to it and the artwork is old school fun! Robin Hoodie is hilarious, Laura did such a good job at this one, the story is very funny, it feels modern and yet at the same time classic... Then there's Zoikz which is okay, an adventure story about some weird viruses called Zoikz that mess with technology, it's okay but it was sold to the Toxic to advertise the website and game, still the stories are okay and the artwork isn't bad, but it's easily my least favourite... And finally Team Toxic, I love this strip, the artwork is fantastic, the storylines are always great plus this strip feels 'classic', Lew does a great job at drawing it and it's a nice story to read and one of the main reasons why  I buy the Toxic at times...

If you'd like me to carry on with Toxic reviews let me know below, thanks! :)

What has happened to the Beano?

The Beano, a favourite, well known comic for all ages, always funny, always entertaining and always a great read...
That is until now.
The Beano has gotten worse due to things like political correctness. I mean lets have a look at the character roster to begin with:

According to the Beano website it's:
Dennis and Gnasher, The Bash Street Kids, Billy Whizz, Minnie the Minx, The Numskulls, The 3 Bears, Ball Boy, Calamity James, Fred's Bed, Ivy the Terrible, Beano Manga, Meebo and Zuky, Ratz, Roger the Dodger, Lord Snooty the Third and Super School

They forget:
Robbie Rebel, Little Plum and Freddie Fear

There's also 60 Second Dennis but really that just counts as Dennis and Gnasher Story 2

Yet this week's included:
Dennis and Gnasher, Minnie the Minx, Billy Whizz, The Numskulls, The Bash Street Kids, Robbie Rebel, Fred's Bed, Roger the Dodger, 60 Second Dennis

So really they lie?

Surely the Beano should look like this:

PG 1: Front Cover
PG 2: Contents
PG 3: Dennis and Gnasher
PG 5: Billy Whizz
PG 6: Minnie the Minx
PG 8: Calamity James
PG 9: Ball Boy
PG 10: The Numskulls
PG 12: Lord Snooty the Third
PG 13: Meebo and Zuky
PG 14: Super School
PG 15: The 3 Bears
PG 16: The Bash Street Kids
PG 18: Robbie Rebel
PG 19: Robbie Rebel/Stripz
PG 20: Beano VIP
PG 22: Fred's Bed
PG 24: Little Plum
PG 26: Ratz
PG 27: Ivy the Terrible
PG 28: Beano Manga
PG 29: Freddie Fear
PG 30: Roger the Dodger
PG 32: Back Page: 60 Second Dennis

See, that fits perfectly... What do you think about the matter, do you think the Beano has become better, worse or still the same, post what you think below. :)

BEST AND WORST:
Best:
Daredevil Dad: The story was fantastically drawn plus the story was very funny
The Bogies: A great story with a hilarious ending!
Harry and his Hippo: I loved it, the cameos of Bully Beef and Chips, the artwork and the storyline, the coolest part being that I was the inspiration for that story!
Arena of Awesome: As if an evil cat destroying a spaceship, defeating a Space Hero and taking over humanity wasn't enough, the story and artwork was incredible as well!
Thingummyblob: It was so sweet, I love Thingummyblob, he just wants hugs and he's so adorable! :D

Worst:
Tag-Team Tastic: it's always bad, this week was better than the previous two but still pretty bad...
Phil's Finger: I honestly did not get it at all... But at least the artwork was good...
Little Chris Evans: the problem was, I don't like Chris Evans so I didn't get any of the jokes that were made, that's why I liked last week's, it didn't have any references, it was just funny! :)

The Beano - Issue 3576

It's Dennis' birthday! The comic only costs £1.35, it's all about the menace, so how can it be a bad issue? Well, that's easy to answer... First of all, let's see the contents...

PG 1: Front Cover - Barrie Appleby
PG 2: Advertisement: Star Wars Figurines
PG 3: Contents
PG 4: Dennis and Gnasher - Barrie Appleby
PG 6: Minnie the Minx - Ken Harrison

PG 30: Advertisement: The Dandy: Korky the Cat - Phil Corbett
PG 31: Advertisement: Beano Shop and Dennis the Menace figurines
PG 32: Back Page: 60 Second Dennis - Nigel Parkinson

What a load of rubbish, on the Beano Forum, fellow member swirlythingy said the following:

"With the Beano's publication schedule, the comic must have been and gone from the printers by now... so I wonder what's in store?

Maybe they're going to stop calling him 'Dennis and Gnasher' and return him to his rightful title?

Maybe they're going to comission a 32- (or even 48-) page story, with laughs every other panel, good writing and proper humour, as opposed to the recent politically correct drivel?

Maybe they're going to run a crude reprint of the Mike Pearse full-length story drawn for his 50th birthday, with the text carefully edited to remove anything which was considered socially acceptable in 2001 but is no longer appropriate for the much more highly evolved, aware and sensitive readers of 2011? And probably bits lopped off the beginning and end to make it fit into a standard comic with room to spare for standard stories for everyone else? I mean, it's his only major work which they haven't actually reprinted in some form yet, and doubtless that's only because they couldn't think of a good excuse. (And this - which looks suspiciously like that very same story - smacks of desperation.)

Maybe they'll comission a new, not-all-that-long story (almost certainly drawn by Nigel Parkinson) with tepid jokes and little in the way of a plot structure?

Maybe they'll just reprint the same old stuff from their extremely narrow archive of past Dennis stories, which get trotted out in just about every retro collection? (Examples: the first ever, the one with the stagecoach, Mike Read's part in the 'missing Gnasher' storyline.)

Maybe they'll ignore it altogether, like they did with Roger's and Minnie's 50th birthdays in 2003? Or print one gimmicky standard-length story, like with Bash Street's 50th in 2004?"

Well, looks like they went with the one we all didn't want, lots of reprinted rubbish...

If I was the editor here's what my idea for a Dennis the Menace 60 year special:

PG 1: Front Cover
(Something that actually had effort put into it rather than a re-used picture of Dennis and Gnasher added to a ripped background plus Plug being used from Dave Sutherland's Bash Street Kids for that week...)
PG 2: Contents
PG 3: Dennis the Menace - Tom Paterson
(No more Dennis and Gnasher, back to the original title.)
(A story in which Dennis sneaks under Fred's Bed and goes back in time and sees all the past Dennis the Menace stories from before, here he meets Biffo the Bear and we see the punch up for the front cover position, rather like the 70 year anniversary when Fred meets Nick Park as a kid)
PG 8: Minnie the Minx - Ken Harrison
(Keep it the same, it was great!)
PG 10: BFG
(If they really need it)
PG 11: Ball Boy - Dave Eastbury
PG 12: The Numskulls - Barry Glennard
PG 14: Dennis' Birthday!
(A long story drawn by a good artist like Tom Paterson or Barrie Appleby)
PG 24: The Bash Street Kids - David Sutherland
PG 26: Little Plum - Hunt Emerson
PG 28: Beano VIP
PG 30: Fred's Bed - Tom Paterson
(Carried on from Dennis the Menace)
PG 34: Ivy the Terrible - Diego Jourdan
PG 36: Billy Whizz - Nick Brennan
PG 37: Biffo the Bear - Andy Fanton
(A sort of welcome back because this is a special one I think Biffo should've featured for some reason...)
PG 38: Roger the Dodger - Barrie Appleby
PG 40: Meebo and Zuky - Laura Howell
PG 41: Super School - Lew Stringer
PG 42: Beano Subscription Page
PG 43: Advertisement: The Dandy - Korky the Cat
PG 44: A Brief History - Barrie Appleby
(In comic strip form)
PG 48: Back Page: 60 Second Dennis - Nigel Parkinson

So yeah, that's what I think, maybe make the comic about £1.50 as it's a special and also have a free gift inside which is a small booklet containing reprinted Dennis the Menace material.

Anyway, on with the review...

This week's wasn't amazing, I'll do a quick rating on the stories inside (new stories not reprints)
Dennis and Gnasher - 10/10
A bit short perhaps but still good, I liked the ending with Dennis catapulting everyone, great to see the menace is back!
Minnie the Minx - 10/10
Very funny, the story was great and the ending actually made me laugh! :D
Lego City - 7/10
Lovely artwork but the story wasn't very funny...
The Numskulls - 5/10
Poor story... Very poor indeed...
The Bash Street Kids - 8/10
Good story minus the ending which wasn't funny...
Roger the Dodger - 8/10
I got very confused with all the Roger lookalikes on page 2, was it really needed?
60 Second Dennis - 9.5/10
I liked it, the new title looks great plus the story was good!

So yeah, it wasn't amazing, certainly not terrible but no where near as good as the Beano's 70th anniversary issue, that issue was amazing...

I have a job!

As the blog title suggests, I now have a job...

Basically my uncle has a band called Something about Whiskey (http://www.somethingaboutwhiskey.com/) and they wanted me to draw for them their band poster, so I drew it:

Drawn by me for the band!
The band loved it! In fact they loved it so much that they hired me as their graphic artist! Woot!

At the moment I'm working on:
- Fact Files for each band member
- A comic strip series of the band

How exciting!
